We could name it the natural view or the guileless view to the extent that, as we grasped it in the first impression, it does not go beyond that impression and consider the countless serious questions that attach themselves to every explanation of mythology. The difficulties present themselves to the more experienced almost immediately, difficulties that would be bound up with this viewpoint if one wanted to take it seriously.

But they are only correct to the extent that they designate the goal for which thought should strive, but not such that they would already have reached the goal itself. The poetic view is also one such first interpretation. It undoubtedly contains what is correct, to the extent that it excludes no meaning and indeed permits mythology to be taken properly. And so we will be careful not to say that it is false; on the contrary, it shows what is to be reached. Only the means to an explanation are missing.

The entire investigation has expanded only gradually, as the various sides of the object only became visible4 to the researchers one after another. Just like the fact that to speak not of this or that mythology, but rather of mythology as such and as a general phenomenon, presupposes not merely the knowledge of various mythologies, which only very gradually came into our possession, but rather also the obtained insight that there is something in common and in agreement in all of them. At the same time, in this way the various viewpoints will not pass us by without all sides of the object thus revealing themselves one after the other such that we will properly know only at the end: what mythology is.
